Six Flags Announces Park Opening Dates for 60th Anniversary

On August 5, 1961, Six Flags Over Texas opened in Arlington, Texas. The park was developed by Angus G. Wynne, Jr., who was inspired to build a Texas park after a visit to Disneyland. The name "Six Flags” refers to the six different nations that have governed Texas: Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the United States of America, and the Confederate States of America.

Sixty years later, Six Flags operates 26 different locations, some of which will be reopening for the first time since shutting down in 2020 amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
