Adventureland's Dark Ride Coaster Reopening with Updates in 2024

Adventureland (Altoona, Iowa) has announced that their indoor wooden dark ride coaster, The Underground, will be reopening in 2024 with “new technology and effects” and a “story-driven experience like never before.” The park says that more information is forthcoming.

The Underground opened on April 27, 1996, with engineering and manufacturing by Custom Coasters International and animatronics and theming by Themed Environments and Effects. The attraction featured a unique story explaining that Adventureland was built on top of a former coal mine that was a hideout by bank robbers and outlaws – including Bad Bob. As the story goes, Bad Bob committed a large gold heist and was trapped in the mine by Sheriff Sam. When Adventureland reopened the mine, miners reported strange activity – perhaps from Bad Bob’s ghost!

Adventureland opened in August 1974, and The Underground’s updates will be part of its 50th-anniversary celebration in 2024.
